Amador County will send three teams to the National Junior Basketball tournament in Los Angeles March 25-28. Amador’s fifth- and sixth-grade boys and girls teams and its seventh- and eighth-grade girls team qualified by finishing first or second at last weekend’s Northern California Regional Qualifying tournament, held in Amador County.
The fifth- and sixth-grade girls won the tournament.
“I think our entire league represented itself well,” said Dave Carlson, President of Amador Youth Basketball, the local arm of the NJB.
The Northern California tournament drew 30 teams coming from Red Bluff, Petaluma, Elk Grove, El Dorado Hills and Sacramento, as well as Amador County, with games held at Amador and Argonaut high schools and Jackson Junior High.
The local teams that took part in last weekend’s regionals were all-star teams chosen after the conclusion of the Amador Youth League’s regular season.
This is the second straight year the league will be represented at nationals.
The trip should provide the Amador teams with plenty of enjoyment both on and off the court. An opening ceremony will be held March 25 and trip organizers are hoping to fit a trip to Disneyland around the games.
“The kids are on independent study and the chaperones will make sure they’re keeping up with their homework,” Carlson said.
