Members of the Amador (left) and Argonaut (right) girls golf teams played a friendly-natured competition on Tuesday at Castle Oaks.

Despite more than three weeks passing since its first official match of the season, the Argonaut High School girls golf team looked sharp in its return to competitive play last Thursday, March 25 at Greenhorn Creek in Angels Camp, handing host Bret Harte its first loss of the season.

Bret Harte opened the season with four straight wins, but was no match for the fine play of the Mustangs and their fabulous freshmen in this matchup as Argonaut outshot the Bullfrogs 189-242.

Freshman Lily Stern led the way for Argonaut with a 41, followed by fellow frosh Ashley Rouen with a 44. Also for the Mustangs, senior Kate Johnson shot a 50, freshman Hannah Anderson shot a 54 and sophomore Savanna Allgeyer added a 66.

“Overall, I’m happy with the ladies’ results,” Argonaut coach Mike Alcoriza said. “The course was playing tough as usual and the ladies played a great round.”

Prior to the March 25 victory, Argonaut hadn’t played a match since a season-opening victory over Amador on March 2.
