In Sac-Joaquin Section playoff action on Wednesday, February 19, the Amador, Argonaut and Calaveras high school varsity boys basketball teams all netted home victories in their playoff openers.

In Sutter Creek, Amador opened the Division IV playoffs with a 60-55 victory over Escalon. The sixth-seeded Buffaloes (19-9) trailed 34-29 at halftime, but outscored the Cougars 31-21 in the second half. Senior Cameron Thetford scored 26 points to lead the Buffaloes, senior Jeremy Gruenwald scored 13 and senior Elijah Nixon scored 10. Amador hits the road for Round 2 and will play at No. 3 Liberty Ranch (16-13) at 7 p.m. this Friday, February 21.

Also in the Division IV playoffs, fifth-seeded Calaveras (21-6) shook off a slow start to beat Hilmar 51-42. Calaveras trailed 12-2 after one quarter, but took the lead for good with a 20-9 run in the third quarter. Freshman Jay Clifton scored 18 points to lead Calaveras, which next faces No. 4 El Dorado (21-8) in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. this Friday, February 21.

In the Division V playoffs in Jackson, fourth-seeded Argonaut opened its bid for a fourth straight trip to the section finals with a 75-51 victory over No. 13 Millennium of Tracy. The Mustangs were originally scheduled to play next in the Division V quarterfinals this Friday, but instead will play at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, February 20 against No. 5 Sacramento Adventist (20-9) in Jackson. Thursday’s game is part of playoff doubleheader at Argonaut High School and will follow a Division IV girls quarterfinal matchup between No. 1 Argonaut (25-4) and No. 9 Dixon (21-7), which is scheduled to tip-off at 6 p.m.

Also on Thursday’s basketball playoff schedule, the Calaveras girls basketball team (19-8), seeded third, hosts No 6 Ripon (20-8) at 7 p.m. in the Division IV quarterfinals in San Andreas.

Admission for all of this week’s Sac-Joaquin Section basketball playoff games is $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and military, and $5 for students (K-12). Children ages 5 and under are free. No league or school passes are accepted for Sac-Joaquin Section playoff games.

In other Sac-Joaquin Section playoff action on Wednesday, the Calaveras girls soccer team, seeded No. 15 in the Division IV playoffs, was eliminated from postseason play with a 5-0 loss to No. 2 Casa Roble.

On Thursday at 6 p.m., the Amador girls soccer team, seeded No. 3 in the Division V playoffs, takes on No. 2 Bradshaw Christian of Sacramento in the Division V semifinals in Sacramento.
