In response to updated guidelines released on December 14 by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) for a return-to-play for high school sports (see related story at ledger.news), the Sac-Joaquin Section announced some alterations to its Season 1 calendar, which includes traditional fall sports such as cross country, football, volleyball and water polo.
The biggest change announced was that there will be no playoffs for those sports.
“We are of the belief that the chance to play more sports contests outweighs the possibility for a postseason,” Sac-Joaquin Section Commissioner Michael Garrison said. “With the guarantee that Season 1 will be starting late, the SJS will forego a traditional postseason to allow all our schools a chance to participate in more contests.”
In place of playoffs for football, volleyball and water polo, Garrison said the section will host “bowl games” instead at the end of the regular season, while the status of the postseason for cross country – the only Season 1 sport allowable in the Purple tier – would be reevaluated in mid/late January.
Garrison added that the CIF continues to advocate on behalf of student-athletes in hopes the CDPH will relax some guidelines when they are reevaluated on January 4.
