The Argonaut Junior Mustangs novice youth football team rode another strong defensive effort to its second straight win, beating the Escalon Outlaws 18-7 in Motherlode Valley Football League play on Saturday in Jackson.

One week after shutting out the Central Valley 49ers, the Junior Mustangs’ defense held the Outlaws to just one touchdown.

Offensively, quarterback Branden Pegueros threw two touchdown passes, including a 73-yard touchdown pass to tight end Grady Nash. Pegueros also connected with running back Errol Garner for a 15-yard touchdown pass. Garner added a rushing touchdown for Argonaut (2-1) with a 74-touchdown run.

Amador 27, Linden 6

The Junior Buffaloes gave up their first points of the season, but were still dominant on defense, winning Saturday’s novice game in Sutter Creek to improve to 3-0 on the season.

Defensively for Amador, Hunter Schneider had a team-high seven tackles; Brandon Miller had five tackles; and Addon Palmer returned an interception 65 yards for a touchdown.

Palmer’s pick-six wasn’t his only touchdown as he also found the end zone on a 45-yard rushing touchdown. He also had a 14-yard pass reception from quarterback Carson Murphy.

Also for the Junior Buffaloes on offense, Aaron McCarty rushed for 45 yards and a touchdown; and Bryden Swisher rushed for 18 yards and a touchdown.


Linden 20, Amador 6

Brody Johnson had a big all-around game for the Junior Buffaloes in Saturday’s game against the Lions in Sutter Creek. Johnson scored the lone touchdown of the game for Amador and also had a 73-yard kickoff return, rushed for 26 yards, caught a pass and made four tackles on defense.

Also for the Junior Buffaloes (0-3), Gauge Britt rushed for 47 yards and made five tackles; quarterback Matt Melville rushed for 17 yards and also completed two passes; Colton Earl had one pass reception; and Trevor Stevens blocked an extra point attempt.

Amador 7, Linden 6

The Junior Buffaloes came out on top in a defensive battle on Saturday in Sutter Creek, handing the visiting Lions their first loss of the season.

Michael Nunes had a strong all-around game for Amador with 50 rushing yards and six tackles.

Defensively, Marcus Scaife, Kris Mittlestadt and Tristen Vasquez each had a quarterback sack for Amador. Scaife had three tackles.

Along with a great team defensive effort, Amador got strong blocking throughout the game from offensive linemen Blake White, Anthony McAllister, Vincent Lee, Tristan Vasquez, John Weir and John McPartland.

Talen Courts also provided strong lead blocking along with Joseph Santiago. Courts scored the lone touchdown for the Junior Buffaloes on an 11-yard run and also recovered an onside kick. Dominic Fillmore caught a pass on the PAT, which provided the winning margin for the Junior Buffaloes.

Also for Amador (2-1), Riley Sanders rushed for 24 yards; and Scaife had 16 rushing yards and caught a 12-yard pass from quarterback Brad Blankenheim.

Junior Novice

Amador shines in scrimmage

Saturday’s junior novice game between Amador and Linden was just a scrimmage with no official score kept, but the Junior Buffaloes still turned in plenty of highlights. Chaesen Palmer rushed for 45 yards and a touchdown, and caught two passes from quarterback Steven Ogilvie for Amador. Defensively, Ogilvie had a sack, two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble and four tackles; and Jeffery Campbell made five tackles.
