Happy New Year everyone. Let’s all make a resolution to get out more, intermingle more, meet more people, get more exercise, and get just a little healthier this year. I’ve got some great ways for you to get out of the house. Please do take advantage of these local opportunities for some great fun.

The U. C. Cooperative Extension would like to help you with your outdoor garden come spring. The class takes place tomorrow, Saturday, January 18, but walk-ins are welcome. The class is entitled “Understanding and Improving Your Soil,” and the class takes place from 9 a.m. to noon at the Amador County GSA Building, 12200-B Airport Road in Jackson. It’s all about improving and maintaining a healthy soil for growing healthy food.

For those of you that live over in the Valley Springs area, there is a very important way you can help your community. On Tuesday, January 28, there is a Valley Springs Community Blood Drive at the Valley Springs Sports and Fitness Center from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Donors must be at least 16 years old and weigh at least 110 lbs. and be in general good health. Please show up and show your support. Oh, also bring a photo I.D.

A class by the U.C. Cooperative Master Gardeners takes place on January 25 from 9 a.m. to noon, again in the GSA Building, 12200-A Airport Road in Jackson. The class is entitled “The Selection and Care of Roses, including Heritage Roses.” Learn how to raise roses in the foothills, and also how and when to prune them. This is a free class, and walk-ins are welcome.

The Sutter Creek Flea Market takes place on Sunday, January 19 from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s held at the Italian Picnic Grounds in Sutter Creek, and this is the “real deal” folks. ONLY vintage and antique merchandise is sold, and this is really like an old country flea market. Come on over and find your special treasures. You won’t find anything new here. Admission is $1, and yes, it does begin at 6 a.m. Note: The market will be cancelled if it rains. Call to confirm at (209) 267-8314 if there’s a chance of rain.

That’s it for today. I will have many more interesting, inexpensive or free things for you to do in the future. I look forward to hearing from you if you know about something that you would like to share with fellow readers. My email address is:
