What a luxury ‘recreational reading’ is to me. I’ve always loved to read, and fortunately, instilled that love of books into my own children at a young age. We made bi-weekly treks to the library (and almost always ended up at the ice cream store).
We have good library services here in Amador County, and we even have those little kiosks here and there that have free reading material on an honorary exchange basis. But did you know that the Amador Senior Center also has an entire hallway of bookshelves that are pretty much loaded with paperback books free for the borrowing? Of course, you are going to bring them back and perhaps ‘exchange’ them for something else, but look at all that reading material that you don’t have to pay for. And if you have excess paperback books, bring them in as well for others to enjoy.
Now I don’t know about you, but I love Victorian Romances. They’re ridiculous at times, but it’s a nice way to spend an afternoon. Of course every Earl and Duke during that time period didn’t marry the scullery maid or the nanny, but romance novels – or any book for that matter – are meant to give us a way to forget the world for a short time, and maybe give us hope. Hope that things will turn out better for us, that our circumstances can change. Well, don’t ever give up those hopes, no matter how young or old you are. Just keep reading. It’s good for the soul, and a great way to spend an afternoon.
My absolute favorite books are the ‘Eragon’ series by Christopher Paolini. The story line is about a young boy who finds a dragon egg, it hatches for him, and he becomes a ‘Dragon Rider,’ eventually changing history in the land of Alagaesia. There’s four healthy-sized books, and I’ve read them over and over again. Don’t know why, but I absolutely LOVE those books.
I spend a lot of time reading. Now that we are going into winter, there’s even more time to read. Yes, it’s so much better to get outside, but there’s nothing better for me than a good book, a big hot mug of cappuccino, and a winter storm outside, howling and trying it’s best to make me feel cut off from this crazy world. Well, it doesn’t work! Reading is a joy, a passion, a pleasure. Sounds like a perfect afternoon to me. A snow storm, a good book, a comfortable chair, and hot tea.
