What was to be a celebration of the North Star independent study program before the Amador County School Board was instead marked by sadness, as the death of long-time North Star teacher Doug Turner was announced at Wednesday’s school board meeting.
Turner, 72, had been a teacher with Amador County Unified School District since 1991 in a variety of positions, including court school, Independence High School and the independent study program.
He died of a brain aneurysm on Sunday, September 22.
School Board President Susan Ross called Turner a “gentle, kind and dedicated teacher, who cared deeply for his students and colleagues.”
The North Star program was scheduled for a “Spotlight on School” presentation, in which students and teachers share stories about their school site and its activities, but the presentation was postponed due to Turner’s death.
In other business at Wednesday’s meeting, the Board reviewed the District’s anti-bullying efforts and adopted revisions to ACUSD’s policies for students who do not have English as a first language.
