Community efforts are underway to support a local teenage girl, whose mother and step-father were involved in a suspected murder-suicide in the Amador upcountry.

The Amador County Sheriff’s Office reported that a 16-year-old girl called 911 when she returned to her home on Rolling Hills Drive in Pioneer on New Year’s Eve and discovered the bodies of her mother and step-father. A subsequent investigation by Sheriff’s deputies and crime scene investigators revealed that both had died of gunshots, and a gun was recovered at the scene. The Sheriff Department has no outstanding suspects in the case. Official release of the names of the two dead await the completion of an autopsy and fingerprinting.

However, banners with messages of support for 16-year-old Kyla Manning, have been seen in the upcountry, and an online fundraiser at gofundme.com was widely circulated on social media.

The GoFundMe page includes a written statement from Kyla, who discussed the alleged murder of her mother Rebecca Manning and the suicide of her mother’s boyfriend Mathew Schiro. Kyla wrote, “My mom was the greatest person I knew. She never wished anything bad upon anyone. She was the sweetest soul I knew and I’m just happy that she was able to raise me to be who I am today.”

As of Thursday morning, January 9, the GofundMe has raised a total of $4,810 toward a goal of $20,000 with 93 donors contributing.
