UPDATED AT 1:00 P.M. ON OCTOBER 15 WITH NAME OF VICTIM
On Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at approximately 4:03 p.m., Jackson Police Department Officers were dispatched to the area of Highway 49 near Coldwell Banker Real Estate (836 N. Highway 49 & 88, Jackson, CA) to a reported vehicle accident involving multiple vehicles.
Officers arrived and located an elderly couple in a blue Ford sedan on the east shoulder of Highway 49 and down the embankment in a westerly direction. The driver side airbags had deployed and the elderly driver had injuries to his head but was speaking. The female passenger was unconscious in the front passenger seat and had no pulse. The female was removed from the vehicle and CPR was started. After approximately 35 minutes of CPR, the female passenger succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
She was later identified as 70-year-old Jacqueline Faie Steffy of Manteca.
Jackson Fire Department arrived and used the hydraulic powered extraction tool to extract the male driver and he was flown to an out of the area hospital. The driver of the other vehicle, a red Dodge SUV, was shaken up but otherwise uninjured.
Initial statements from witnesses reported seeing the blue Ford sedan pull out of The Call thrift store parking lot and into the path of the red SUV which was traveling south on Highway 49. Drugs and/or alcohol are not believed to be a factor in this accident and the investigation is ongoing.
