On Wednesday, September 18, 2019, around 7:39 a.m., a small pick-up truck travelling eastbound on Highway 88, just east of Highway 104, collided head-on with a transfer truck traveling westbound.

The driver and sole occupant of the pick-up truck was an Amador County Sheriff’s Office Court Security Deputy traveling to his assignment at the Amador County Court House.

Medics with American Legion Ambulance, Ione Police Department, California Highway Patrol, Jackson Police Department, CalFire, Amador Fire Protection District, Ione Fire and the City of Jackson Fire responded.

The deputy was transported by medics to an awaiting air ambulance at the CalFire Academy. CPR and other life-saving measures were performed, but ultimately the deputy succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

The deputy was identified as 63-year-old Mark Lawrence of Ione. Mark spent 26 years with the Amador County Sheriff’s Office and retired in 2010. In 2014, Mark was sworn in as an Amador County Court Security Deputy.

A press release from the Amador County Sheriff’s Office stated: “Mark will be missed by all of his family at the Sheriff’s Office. We want to thank all the agencies involved for the overwhelming show of professionalism, compassion and support in our time of need. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.”

Mark Lawrence is survived by his wife Sheri Lawrence, son Aaron and daughter Heather Lawrence. Mark also has two stepchildren with Sheri.

Details regarding funeral services will be announced at a later time.
