Installation of 2019-2020 Board Members at the St. George Hotel in Volcano.

On October 3, 1949, a Monday, members of Soroptimist of Calaveras County chartered Soroptimist of Amador County in what was then the Bank of Amador on Main Street in Jackson.  Forty local business women joined together to perform service to the community.  The first President was Betty Read. Other members on the board were Frances Schacht, Marea Richards, Ester Depaoli, Gen Fuller, Helen Gorman and other very distinguished women. In those days only business owners and/or professional women could join the Club.  Now, however, membership is open to all that want to make a difference to the community.

The goal of the Club was to support women in their endeavor to provide a platform for women to succeed in business and therefore be able to donate their time and financial aid to our community. The basic foundation is and was that Soroptimist does not engage in any political party or religion. The goal of Soroptimist is a global volunteer organization that provides women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment.

Over the 70 years that Soroptimist has been in Amador County there has never been a time when the Club hasn’t been active. In the early fifties, members manned observation tower watching for enemy planes and later were volunteer fire watches at Mt. Zion in Pine Grove. To raise money for the youth of the county in the form of High School scholarships and for other various service projects, they have sold Birthday Calendars (and still do), participated in the Kit Carson parades, made and sold lunches, held yard sales, and had booths at Dandelion Day.

The club hosts an annual Grand High Tea and Fashion Show.  The next one is set for February 29, 2020.  Spaghetti Bunko is set for October 12, 2019 at the American Legion Hall. Contact Linda at (209) 274-6653 for tickets.

“LIVE YOUR DREAM” is a scholarship program given to a woman who is the head of household and working toward a goal to further their education or trade.  Soroptimist also sponsors and supports the local youth service club known as the S-Club (S for Service).

Meetings are held at the Amador Senior Center the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month at 6:00 p.m.  Soroptimist International of Amador County is a 501c3.  The mailing address is P.O. Box 1105, Jackson, CA, 95642. The current President is Donna Miller. Check out our Facebook at Soroptimist International Amador County.

On October 22, there will be a celebration to commemorate the past 70 years of service at our Program meeting at the Amador Senior Center at 6:00 p.m.
