Amador County’s A&A Shooters youth trapshooting team competed at Stockton Trap and Skeet on Saturday, May 6 in fifth Series Shoot of the season sponsored by the California Youth Shooting Sports Association. There were more than 220 youth shooters from St. Mary’s, Sutter, Woodcreek, Galt, Durham and Bear River high schools in attendance, as well as club teams from Los Banos and Sacramento joining the local A&A Shooters team, which brought home five medals.
Thirteen of A&A’s first-year shooters competed against 37 other athletes in Entry Level category with many hitting their personal best scores. Sixth-grader Dillon Middlekauf broke 20 out of 25 targets on his first trap of the morning, then continued to improve on that score by hitting 23, 22, 24 on his next three rounds to finish with a personal best of 89 out of 100 for fourth place. Close on his heels was teammate Jeffrey Chase, who hit 24 of 25 targets on his third round for a total score of 87 and fifth place. Tied for seventh place were Camren Crago and James DeKay, both with 83s, and Vincent Wright finished in eighth with an 82. Allison Bennion and Alivia Wilder hit 68 of their 100 targets each; Zach D’Agostini and Azra Silva both had 66s; Chase Broucaret hit 65; Andrew Morse and Angel Vallin 63s; and Dylan Wilmshurst finished his last round of 25 with an 18, his all-time highest score in a competition.
In the more experienced Junior High shooters category, A&A’s Gavin Jennings continued his medal streak at the Series Shoots by breaking a pair of 23s on his last two traps to end with a score of 84, which tied him with two others for fourth place. In a shoot-off for the fourth place medal, Jennings hit all of his targets, a perfect 25, to claim the medal. James Barkell and Gabe Mynderup finished the day strong by hitting 23 and 21, respectively, on their last traps of the day for total scores of 81 and 76. The Clearwater brothers, Patrick and Blayke, hit the exact same score of 75 and Luke Lyman broke a pair of 20s in the afternoon for a 74. Lily Valencia had consistent shooting for a 74 and Tyler Clark broke a 73.
The scores were high in the Junior Varsity category with a Galt shooter hitting a 98 for first place, a Bear River shooter hit 97 for second and a Woodcreek shooter hit a 95 for third. A&A’s Bryson Bennion tied for fourth place with a 94, but forfeited his chance at the medal by not being available for the shoot-off and received the green ribbon medal for fifth. Canon Caruso hit all his last trap targets for a perfect 25 to finish with a 91 overall and Amelia Wilder shot 23, 20, 25, 23 on her four rounds for a 91. Parker McGee and Corey Reilly both hit 84 of their 100 targets.
All A&A Varsity shooters participated in the contest with some outstanding results. Leading the team and the entire event with his score of 99 was senior Andrew Warren. Warren broke 75 straight, earning him his first 75 straight patch before he lost one target on his last trap. Illustrating how important one target can be, behind Warren were three other athletes from Bear River, Los Banos and Durham, each with scores of 98. A&A’s Colton Folena hit 22, 25, 24, 24 for a 95 and Aaron Smith started with a 25 and finished with a pair of 24s for a 95 also. Rider Haight hit 93; Jacob Bennion 92 with one perfect round; Will Vicini 91; Elijah Hanes 90; Cody Heath 86; Jacob Redding 86; Matthew McGee 77; Devin Guillot 73; John Bradley 71; Clancy Frawley 70; and Morgan Chase 69.
