On Thursday, October 7, 2021, at approximately 12:28 a.m., a California Highway Patrol unit from the Amador area office was dispatched to a traffic collision that occurred on Highway 49 south of Argonaut Lane. Upon arrival, the officers observed a Black 2011 Nissan Versa down the dirt and grass embankment to the east of Highway 49. The Nissan had major traffic collision damage to the front, rear and sides. Officers approached the Nissan and observed a white male slumped over the steering wheel and unconscious.
Paramedics on scene determined the 26-year-old male driver succumbed to his injuries as a result of the collision. Officers on scene determined the driver was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision. A preliminary investigation appears to show that the Nissan was traveling northbound on Highway 49 south of Argonaut Lane when the driver allowed the Nissan to veer off the roadway.
The Nissan traveled down the dirt and grass embankment, subsequently colliding with several trees. The investigation is ongoing at this time. lt is unknown at this time whether alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in this collision. The name and city of residence of the driver is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Any witnesses are requested to contact Amador CHP at (209) 223-4890.
▪️ Update Tuesday, October 12, 2021: After notification of next of kin, CHP Amador reports the driver as 28-year-old Christopher Petersen. The initial collision report from CHP Amador listed the drivers age as 26-years-old. This article has now been corrected to reflect the drivers correct age.
