An 81-year-old Jackson woman was killed in a vehicle accident on Highway 16 over the weekend. According to a California Highway Patrol collision report, on Sunday, May 21 at approximately 12:15 p.m., the driver of a 2023 Dodge, 35-year-old Justin Keaton of West Point, was traveling eastbound on State Route 16 approaching Long Gate Road at an undetermined speed, while a 2018 Toyota was traveling westbound on State Route 16 west of Long Gate Road at an undetermined speed approaching the Dodge from the opposite direction. The driver of the Dodge was attempting to pass another vehicle and crossed over into the westbound lane directly into the path of the Toyota. Both vehicles attempted to swerve towards the north shoulder, but were unable to avoid a head-on collision.

The driver of the Dodge sustained minor injuries and the driver of the Toyota, an 81-year-old Jackson woman whose identity has been withheld pending notification, was pronounced deceased on scene. The roadway was partially blocked for approximately one hour to facilitate the investigation, scene cleanup and removal of the vehicles. Alcohol and drugs are not suspected as factors in the accident and no arrests were made.
