Diane Wratten accused me of being a political conspiracy theorist (“City of Ione not immune to political conspiracy theories,” Letters to the Editor; May 19, 2023). Nothing could be further from the truth. I do apologize for misspelling Diane’s first name.
Ms. Wratten indicated that she had never met Michael Rock until he was interviewed for the Interim Ione City Manager position in April 2021. Diane said that she, Stacy Rhoades, Dan Epperson and Rodney Plamondon met with Rock and all voted to appoint him as the Interim City Manager. My only comment to her statement is that I was not in attendance. Given Rock’s checkered and suspect prior history as the City Manager in other California cities, I can only conclude that the City of Ione was desperate to employ an Interim City Manager.
Diane, you are correct that the decision to release Rock is water under the bridge. I am hopeful as well that the current Interim City Manager will be successful while in the position. There are not, in my opinion, conspiracy theorists lurking in every door and hallway. On September 20, 2022, the then-Council Majority, which included Ms. Wratten and Mr. Atlan voted to approve Michael Rock as the permanent City Manager, gave him a generous salary and benefits package and a severance pay package. Stacy Rhoades and the vast majority of citizens in the audience or participating by Zoom, loudly and strongly objected. They were ignored. On November 8, 2022 a new City Council majority was elected. They voted to terminate Mr. Rock believing that his presence was toxic in City Hall. Blame is properly and squarely on yours and Atlan’s shoulders. I believe citizens of Ione will remember and vote you out in 2024 and Atlan in 2026.
